Adelaide Backpacking Guide

South Australias state capital Adelaide is too often only used as a transit point by backpackers backpacking Australia. The city is a great place to use as a starting point for trips to the red centre and Uluru, or as a start point for the long trip west towards Perth over the Nullarbor Plain.

Adelaide CityMany travellers backpacking Australia are so focused on where they are heading next, they don’t take the time to see what Adelaide has to offer, and Adelaide has a lot to offer the backpacker. The city centre is filled with a superb shopping district with a great mixture of chain stores and boutique shopping in some of the more trendy suburbs. Adelaide is somewhat pinned to the coast by the Mount Lofty Ranges, but this makes for a great setting that given the chance, you can’t help but fall in love with.

Spend days browsing the shops in the city centre, it’s easy to get tied up looking around the cities numerous book shops, and exploring the numerous beautiful churches that are scattered around the city. If shopping isn’t your thing then the street café scene in Adelaide is fantastic and you will meet loads of like minded travellers backpacking Australia soaking up the rays over a coffee in Australia’s driest state capital. At night the city and suburb districts really jump into life with live music on every corner, and hundreds of backpackers mingling with the locals at some of the best spots.

If you’re after a beach life then Adelaide won’t disappoint in this area. Head down to Seacliff, Brighton or Glenelg for some of the best beaches in Adelaide and soak up the rays with the crowds that flock there in the summer. Closer to town you can also relax taking a stroll or simply sunbathing in one of Adelaide’s parks and recreational areas that surround this beautiful city.

Accommodation is plentiful in Adelaide, however parking is not, so the most popular hostels are those with available parking so best to try and book ahead during peak summer periods.
