Tasmania

Tasmania (TAS) is Australia's only island state, lying in the Tasman Sea and separated from the mainland by the Bass Strait. Often referred to as the ‘’natural state’’ it is often overlooked or forgotten by people backpacking around Australia. Tasmania's capital Hobart sits proudly in the south-east of the state, and boasts a very active entertainment scene.

Due to its isolation from the mainland, Tasmania has held onto a lot of its charm and history. In fact there is some friction between Tasmanians and mainlanders with parties from both sides quite happy to see Tasmania somewhat separate from the rest of Australia. The state of TAS is very different to the rest of

Tasmania

Australia, with a lush green landscapes and snow peaked mountains. The north and east of the state are more populated than the relatively remote areas in the south and west, although these regions do boast some fantastic little towns.

Tasmania's climate is temperate and experiences warm sunny summers, with sometimes bitterly cold winters. Parts of the state see snow covering in the winter which enhances the already breathtaking landscape. The coastline is also stunning with the crystal clear waters, surprising many visitors to the state. It’s not hard to find a golden sanded beach to yourself, and spend lazy summer days basking in the sunshine while cooling off in the ocean.

The main asset of the state has to be the natural scenery that will take your breath away on a regular basis. The riverine systems are teaming with life and the states national parks offer some of the best walks in Australia. Getting your first view of Wineglass Bay in the east or Cradle Mountain in the west makes the long hikes worthwhile.

The towns and cities vary dramatically from sleepy fishing towns like Strahan in the west, to the bustling port town of Devonport that is the main ferry terminal for the mainland. The university town of Launceston provides the backpacker with a great base for exploring the north, combined with a vibrant nightlife. But the jewel in Tasmania’s crown is its capital Hobart, shadowed by Mount Wellington the city is alive with bars, clubs and restaurants.

Accommodation in Tasmania is easy to find and it seems that even the smallest town seems to provide refuge for the backpacker, at affordable prices. Hobart backpacker hostels are scattered around the city with the best being near the CBD. Launceston backpacker hostels also offer good value for money but whereever you are in the state, Tasmania backpacker hostels won’t disappoint.
