Backpacking Overview

The definition of a backpacker used to be (and still is in some countries) someone travelling the most remote places on earth with only the gear they can carry in their pack for company.

In recent years the identification by the travel and tourism industry of the importance of the backpacker community has lead to a rise in worldwide backpacker travel. With accumulation of cheaper plane flights and specific backpacker accommodation backpacking is now well within the reach of people from all walks of life.

Due to the ease of travelling in today’s world backpacking has moved on dramatically. Although thousands of people still opt to trade up their busy lives for rugged remote countries the most popular destinations for backpackers are countries that give the traveller a certain amount of home comforts.

This means that in today’s world a backpacker is more likely to swap their home life to live in Sydney or Auckland rather than places such as South America and India.

This change in attitude takes nothing away from some of the worlds more remote and unspoilt destinations, but due to the extreme change of life style and culture these destinations don’t always appeal to everyone.

The thing to remember when choosing your backpacking destination is that it’s not just the location that makes your trip, it’s also the people you share your experience with. You can be sure that wherever you find yourself you’ll find like minded backpackers on the trail and its moments you share with these people that will make your trip one to remember!!
